Greetings fellow CSBA Members! I hope this month’s newsletter finds you all enjoying plenty of time in on the water with the cooling temperatures!
On September 10th CSBA hosted our seventh club tournament of the 2011 season on upper portions of Lake of the Ozarks. Daytime temperatures lately have been quite comfortable, in the 70’s, a much welcomed break from the scorching summer we’ve had. By afternoon the temperatures were heating up, but a late afternoon front brought in some welcomed cloud cover and a stout North wind cooling things off. In all 14 competitors made the trek to Warsaw to see who could figure out what the LOZ bass were up to.

As usual, pre-fishing reports were a mixed bag. Water temps were cooling, currently in the mid 70’s. Some reported having a hard time finding a keeper bite, while others reported limits. Local reports indicated the lake level had been fluctuating quite a bit lately, with the current trend being dropping. The shad activity in the bays and creeks hadn’t really got going and the bass didn’t seem to be keying on them just yet, at least not in any significance. The fish seemed to be on the transition from their summer pattern somewhat. Some fish were reported in the bays and creeks, around wood and docks, but that bite didn’t seem to hold up. Others found success in the main lake lay-downs on a variety of lures from spinner baits and crank baits to flipped soft plastics.  As usual someone always manages to figure them out one way or another!

Not only taking his first win of the year, but his first time in the money this year was our esteemed president, Deon Hockensmith! With a marginal pre-fishing day on Friday, Deon obviously eliminated the right water to weigh in a nice 5 fish limit tipping the scales to 8.89 lbs! Deon indicated he caught his fish out of main lake lay downs. Congratulations on your first win of the year!

Having boated a nice limit of LOZ keepers the day before, all expectations were that Terry Corum would be the guy to beat today. However, it wasn’t to be as Terry’s prior day bite fizzled somewhat. Terry still managed to boat 2 nice keepers to claim second place honors at 5.34lbs. Terry found a strong bite producing 2 limits on Friday in the bays and sloughs around docks. But unfortunately that bite didn’t hold out for him. Regardless it was still a fine finish.

Rounding out the final paying spot was yours truly, Jeff Wilson. Jeff weighed in 3 fish at 5.21 lbs to take 3rd place honors. It was a KVD kind of day for me where I tied on the crank bait and covered water. My fish all came off of wood of some kind, mostly main lake lay-downs.

Boater big bass honors went to Pat Greisen who boated a nice 3.77 lb LOZ chunk.

Non-Boater big bass honors went to Charlie Aulgur who lured the tournament big bass of 3.88 lbs to his topwater bait first thing Saturday morning!
